NOMADIC RESIDENTS
The Nomadic Residents residency program offers invited visiting artists and scholars an opportunity to explore, in a collegial and collaborative environment, issues of temporality, travel, location, belonging, identity and home. The residency is financially supported by Partners in Art, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting the arts in Canada.
Nomadic Residents is a forum for thought-provoking debate about contemporary art; it’s also a tremendous educational tool. As a high-profile lecture series, it extends far beyond the perimeters of OCAD, engaging both local and distant communities. Each lecture in the Nomadic Residents series offers significant insight into contemporary art practice. Each also contributes to a growing archive — one that will document the best and the brightest in the contemporary art world.
Since 2007, OCAD has had the pleasure of hosting Rirkrit Tiravanija, Ann Hamilton and ORLAN. Each of these internationally acclaimed artists spent a week at OCAD. The artists presented sold-out public lectures and interacted directly with OCAD students from many different programs and year levels. Rirkrit Tiravanija’s residency culminated in his inaugural exhibition at the OCAD Professional Gallery. Ann Hamilton and ORLAN conducted week-long workshops with small groups of students that resulted in public exhibitions at OCAD’s Nuit Blanche events in 2007 and 2008. This type of contact between high-profile artists and students is unprecedented.

Next Nomadic Resident at OCAD - Hal Foster
OCAD is pleased to announce that Hal Foster will be our fourth Nomadic Resident, at OCAD from November 2 to 6, 2009. Foster will give a free public lecture about his work in the OCAD Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3, 2009. All are welcome to attend. Limited seating available; guests are advised to arrive early.
OCAD’s Nomadic Residents program was launched and generously supported by Partners in Art in 2006 with Rirkrit Tiravanija, and continued with residents Ann Hamilton (2007) and ORLAN (2008). Hal Foster's residency in 2009 would not be possible without the generosity of the Jack Weinbaum Family Foundation.
